Cloud provider opts for X-IO hybrid SSD arrays
UK remote applications and telecoms provider RTW Hosting has implemented greater than £600,000 worth of X-IO Hyper ISE and ISE 2 storage arrays to accomplish a 2,471% IOPS performance increase over its previous configuration while using five times less space and tool.
X-IO’s Hyper ISE hybrid SSD arrays mix SSD and HDD SAS drives with data tiering between the 2. The vendor’s ISE 2 arrays are all spinning disk. Both products incorporate X-IO’s Intelligent Storage Elements technology, which uses self-healing diagnostics to work around failed areas of the drive.
RTW Hosting began testing X-IO in February this year after rapid growth favorite for its services ended in performance degradation in its existing storage estate. X-IO’s ISE solutions delivered 180,000 IOPS over the former configuration’s 7,000 IOPS.
Mike Wills, CEO and founding father of RTW Hosting, said, “We’re seeing 25 times the IOPS we got with our previous SAN, with extremely low latency; VM deployment is around 15 to twenty times quicker; and our storage is perfectly placed to simply handle IOPS storms and make sure the end user doesn’t see any performance degradation.”
Buffalo’s two new iSCSI and NAS SMB arrays
SMB storage vendor Buffalo Technology has announced the TeraStation 5200 and 5400, which are used for NAS and iSCSI file- and block-level access. The TeraStation 5200 is a two-bay device while the 5400 has four bays. The arrays offer mirroring between one another and feature 2 GB of fast DDR3 memory installed.
Coraid appointment
ATA-over-Ethernet storage array vendor Coraid has appointed Peter Godden because the company’s senior director for EMEA. Before joining Coraid, Peter was at Isilon Systems.
OnApp to bundle storage virtualisation software
UK-based cloud software vendor OnApp has announced that OnApp Storage, its storage virtualisation software, would be bundled with the OnApp Cloud platform for no additional cost later this year. OnApp Storage allows customers to create a SAN from SATA and SSD drives within the space bays of existing servers. It’s currently on public beta and should be included with OnApp Cloud from the third quarter of this year onwards.
Silver Peak gets EqualLogic certification
WAN optimisation product vendor Silver Peak Systems has announced its Virtual Acceleration Open Architecture (VXOA) software have been tested and qualified with Dell EqualLogic replication. In joint lab testing, Silver Peak demonstrated performance gains of as much as 15 times for replication throughput, while real-world deployments have realised a performance increase of as much as 20 times with as much as 90% WAN bandwidth reduction.
